The diesel deception.

What ugly engines sounding as if they are damaged from the first minute of their operation!

But more important is the destruction of  the environment, of course.

Even some years ago, when they considered as "green" engines, when I  was going for jogging at the low hills, if a (diesel) car, (even of the latest models), was(/is) passing through, my breath became irritated.

My attitude

For comparison, I can tell you a short story:  the last summer, (2016), I parked my Syncro g60 Passat, (25 years old, 280.000 km, no repairs), exactly outside the open door of a very small store, one of these we have in Greece selling various light products, (convenience store), letting the engine to idle, because the clima was on. Shop's  only one door was open having no air conditioner.

I went inside waiting for my turn.

There were some persons shopping, so I had to wait for about 10'.

When my turn came I asked the shopkeeper if he felt any smell of exhaust gas, because all these 10 minutes my car's engine was working exactly outside his only opening for fresh air.

He was astonished because he didn't notice anything, (not even the low whisper frequency of my g60), and he came out to see if the engine was running really, and, since the engine was running, tried to persuade me to tell him what I have done, (nothing except the NGK BUE, surface discharge, spark plugs).

But, since the manufacturers decide for us that diesels are perfect and, at least, as good as the petrol engines, we have to accept them.

So let's start the journey.

Firstly, the raw materials.

Secondly, they will be organized.

"Volkswagen may have resorted to cheating because the NOx trap eats up fuel or reduces the car's pep, Herner said. It's a relatively simple fix to reactivate NOx traps on the recalled cars, he said.

"These vehicles can operate within our regulations," Herner said. "Our priority now is to get them fixed so that they do so."

But Volkswagen owners may end up being disappointed with the more sluggish, gas-guzzling cars they get back, Herner said."

An international trend:

(In Greece), "the demand for the diesels, for the first months of the 2017, drop, from the 70%, (of the total demand), to the 40%".

Volkswagen USA CEO: "We Totally Screwed Up"

At the launch of the new 2016 Volkswagen Passat in Brooklyn, New York, Volkswagen Group of America President and CEO Michael Horn spoke candidly about the automaker's TDI emissions debacle.

BY BOB SOROKANICH

"Tonight's launch of the U.S.-spec 2016 Volkswagen Passat was supposed to be a celebration for Volkswagen of America. Taking place in a trendy waterfront warehouse in the Brooklyn Navy Yard overlooking Manhattan across the river, it was all set to be a swanky media affair, complete with a live performance by Lenny Kravitz.

But in light of Friday's revelation by the EPA that Volkswagen had purposely engineered many of its TDI diesel-powered cars to cheat our nation's emissions tests, the journalists in attendance hoped to learn about more than just the minor aesthetic changes to the automaker's midsize family sedan.

So when Michael Horn, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, took the stage, he couldn't simply chat up the debut of the new Passat. Instead, he gave a brief yet frank appraisal of the situation—one that, while it offered zero detail as to why VW went down this road in the first place, at least acknowledged the controversy that now surrounds the auto industry giant.

"As you have seen since Friday, the EPA, the Environmental Protection Agency, has issued a statement and reality that Volkswagen Group manipulated engine software in our TDI diesel cars, and we violated emissions standards," Horn began immediately after taking the stage. "The CEO of our parent company Dr. Martin Winterkorn said yesterday Volkswagen will fully cooperate with the responsible agencies, and much much more important as I see it, he stated that he was personally and deeply sorry for this—that Volkswagen has broken the trust of our customers, and the public here in America. And lastly he stated that this matter, and this is I think common sense, now this is the first priority for him personally and for the entire product management [team].

"So let's be clear about this: our company was dishonest with the EPA and the California Air Resources Board, and with all of you," Horn continued. "And in my German words, we've totally screwed up. We must fix those cars, and prevent this from ever happening again, and we have to make things right—with the government, the public, our customers, our employees, and also very importantly our dealers.

"This kind of behavior, I can tell you out of my heart, it's completely inconsistent with our core values. The three core values of our brand are value, innovation, and in this context very importantly, responsibility—for our employees, for our stakeholders, and for the environment. So it goes totally against what we believe is right. Along with our German headquarters we are committed to do what must be done, and to begin to restore your trust.

"Of course we didn't invite you here just to talk about TDI, and of course we could have also canceled this," Horn said. "But we said first of all we need to explain ourselves here and begin to straighten things out, and secondly we're here because we want to see something pretty exciting now, the newly-redesigned 2016 Volkswagen Passat."

Then the CEO explained the changes made to the newly redesigned Passat, as three examples rolled into the warehouse and onto the stage. After the standard new-car-unveiling speech, Horn wrapped things up by again returning to the elephant in the room.

"I would like to put this really into perspective. The United States is very important for Volkswagen. We have more than five million customers on the road driving our cars, and more than five million customers visiting our showrooms every year . . . . We must do this with honor. All these people, whether it's our customers, dealer families, or employees and their families, depend on us to run a successful business here with high ethical standards. We must do this in order to carry out our responsibilities to all of our stakeholders.

"My commitment first and foremost is to make sure that our entire company does what it takes to resolve this big challenge, and to restore your trust. Our future depends on turning this into an opportunity—to learn, to improve—and we are ready to do so. And I am confident and I'm personally committed that this company will do what needs to be done to make things right.

"You can be sure that we will continue not only to correct this TDI issue, and to straighten things out, and to pay what we have to pay, and we will continue to work very hard to make our story in the US for the customers and dealers and employees successful."

CNN:

Germany's top court says cities can ban diesel cars

09/May/2018

Between Scylla and Charybdis.

By  on May 8, 2018
Despite recent claims from Bosch that it’s prepared to save the diesel engine from becoming outlawed in Europe (which is like a prettier and less-free version of America), Nissan has announced its intent to withdraw sparkless motors from the market. Thanks to dwindling demand, the automaker claims it’s going to begin a gradual retreat until it no longer sells diesel vehicles in the region.

The announcement follows a similar plan unveiled by Toyota in March of this year and calls into question what the remaining Japanese manufacturers will decide in the months to come. Nissan said Monday that it will shift its focus to electrified vehicles, hoping the emerging technology can fill the void. But European manufacturers have the most to lose as the market changes.

“The Japanese especially I could see doing this, since they were more skeptical of the technology from the beginning and don’t have a lot of competence in the field,” Stefan Bratzel, director of automotive management at the University of Applied Sciences in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany, told Bloomberg in an interview.

However, Japanese manufacturers accounted for just over 12 percent of European deliveries last year and the majority weren’t diesels. Around 16 percent of Nissan’s European volume comes from diesel variants, which is higher than other Japanese automakers but insignificant compared to domestic models.

BMW’s fleet, which includes Mini, was 64 percent diesel in 2017 and Mercedes-Benz stood at 62 percent. Meanwhile, Jaguar Land Rover sat at an astronomical 90 percent. Stricter emissions limits, new taxes on diesel vehicles, and looming bans are suppressing sales, and European automakers have far more to lose than their Japanese counterparts.

The silver lining is the gradual nature of the diesel decline. Already losing popularity before Volkswagen’s emission cheating scandal in 2015, the subsequent drop in volume hasn’t sheared its market share off at the knees. But the drop is significant. Market penetration for diesel vehicles sat at 52 percent when news of the scandal broke; it’s now closer to 44 percent.

Analyst projections vary, but the general consensus sees Europe’s diesel market shrinking to around 40 percent by the end of the year. IHS Markit anticipates the gradual decline to continue, with sales around 32 percent by 2025, though other sources estimate numbers as low as 12 percent within the same timeframe. We expect the final tally to be highly dependent upon the speed of electric vehicle technology development and EU regulations in the near future.

Get rid of them!

It’s open season on compression ignition vehicles in the Fatherland. The birthplace of the diesel engine now says German cities can implement diesel driving bans whenever, and wherever, they want.

The Friday ruling by the country’s top court comes after a lawsuit against Germany and four other European Union member states by the EU, the result of higher-than-allowed air pollution levels in numerous urban areas.

While this may seem like a heavy-handed, “Euro Sausage” type approach to the affairs of European nations by the EU, smog-causing nitrogen oxide isn’t a pleasant gas, and diesel vehicles — older ones especially — are the main culprit.

Germany’s top automakers, each a longtime proponent of diesel technology, stand to lose money and customers as the public, fearful of planned or future bans in their own cities, flock to gas- or electric-powered offerings. Hamburg is expected to implement a diesel ban by the end of the month. Other large cities, like Stuttgart, Dusseldorf, and Munich, could soon follow.

The ruling by the country’s administrative court in Leipzig states that cities can ban the use of diesel-powered cars and trucks on certain roadways, or sections of them, immediately. There’s no grace period. One caveat is that vehicles conforming to ultra-stringent Euro 6 emissions standards would still be allowed. This standard came into effect in 2015.

For broader areas of cities, local governments are allowed to implement a phased approach that allows the operation of vehicles meeting Euro 4 emissions standards (in effect from 2005 to 2009).

The ball really got rolling on diesel bans back in February, when Germany’s top court ruled that environmental groups could sue cities that aren’t taking proper action on enforcing European air pollution rules.

Once the court opened the door to driving bans, sales of diesel cars plunged roughly 25 percent in Germany in March (after sinking 19.5 percent in February and 17.6 percent in January). Incentives appeared on some diesel cars.

In the home country of Volkswagen Group, the automaker is currently in the midst of fixing the emissions software on 2.8 million vehicles. Mercedes-Benz and BMW could be forced to offer upgrades for vehicles with non-Euro 6 engines.

According to Reuters, research firm Evercore ISI estimates the ruling could cost the country’s auto industry $17.1 billion.
